We make every effort to facilitate rapid analysis of initial suspected cases of cancer at the so-called routine laboratory and in cooperation with our partner laboratory, e.g. by examining blood in urine or stools. Our partner laboratory provides a full range of advanced, computer-aided routines and special diagnostics for oncological diseases. The core laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art analysis instruments, which means we are able to conduct even complex analyses at any time of day. UNIFONTIS also offers state-of-the-art medical technology in the field of imaging diagnostics. The focus here is on PET/CT scanning in partnership with the Hospital Braunschweig, which combines the techniques of
 positron emission tomography (PET) and computer tomography (CT). These procedures show up even the smallest cancer foci and enable progression of the disease to be monitored with greater precision. Our close partnership with Radiology Braunschweig enables us to arrange PET/CT appointments at very short notice.

Latest news: the full-body PET-MRI scanner represents the highest level of technical innovation, combining positron emission tomography (PET) with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a single device. For patients this means a significant reduction in both examination time and stress, since exposure to radiation is much lower. The technology helps to detect malignant tumours or metastases far earlier than with traditional methods, as well as enabling a more reliable characterisation and localisation with regard to other organs.

Therapy Sensitivity Test – Tailored Therapy

Every cancer sufferer develops the disease differently. Despite the many side effects, chemotherapy and radiation treatment have a high cure rate. Since the 1970s doctors have been focusing their efforts on minimising side effects for the patient. One component of this is the therapy sensitivity test.

Following a confirmed positive diagnosis, the therapy sensitivity test analyses the effectiveness of various cytostatics, tyrosine kinase inhibitors, antiangiogenic agents or herbal preparations on tumour cells.

The findings provide information on how the patient reacts to different medical agents. This enables us to predict the effectiveness of various antitumoral therapies – one of the fundamental principles of individualised therapy.

The test also offers the option of determining various receptor characteristics on the tumour cell (Her2/neu, EGFR, ER, PR). Testing requires approx. 10 - 30 ml of venous blood (depending on the number of drugs to be tested). Test results are available for diagnosis within approx. 5-7 days.

Liquid biopsy

Liquid biopsy identifies clinically relevant, cancer-specific point mutations, insertions, deletions and gene fusions in circulating cell-free DNA down to an allele frequency of 0.1%. In addition, liquid biopsy detects copy number alterations on tiny amounts of circulating tumor DNA.

Liquid biopsy enables indirect analysis of both the primary tumor as well as its metastases, capturing the entire heterogeneity of the disease. It is suitable both for disease monitoring to control treatment efficacy and to observe emergence of possible resistance mechanisms.

Sample requirements: two to three 10 ml collection tubes (provided by Unifontis); samples can be shipped at ambient/room temperature.
